COVID in the house

James has tested positive for COVID. He is doing well – he’s got a persistent, dry cough but is in good spirits undoubtably bolstered by the unfettered access he has to an iPad and my laptop, both of which are chock full of games.

Last week was extraordinarily busy at work and at home, so we were all looking forward to a break this weekend to unwind. It was not to be – not only did James test positive on Friday, but Gemma’s entire class was exposed on the same day. It never just rains, right? As of this morning she has tested negative and we are keeping the kids apart, enforcing strict household mask wearing. Still, only time will tell. I am expecting us all to get it, but hopefully we can minimize exposure (and viral load) through these mitigation measures and reduce the impact of any illness.

While it was probably inevitable, this stings given how close we likely are to vaccinations being approved for kids of James’ age. I could go on and on about what this experience says about where we live – the non-existent contact tracing, the self-reporting honor system, the lack of mask wearing in schools that undoubtably led to where we are today…but I don’t have the energy. It certainly does bring focus to one’s priorities in choosing a place to live. Probably a topic for a future post.

Fingers crossed that we can soon put this experience behind us.
