Light at the end of the tunnel…?

It’s remarkable to me that about a year ago, @elizabeth and I were having a seemingly incredulous conversation about what the rapidly progressing pandemic could actually mean for us. Weeks of lockdown? Months? Surely things would be under control by her birthday in June, right?

A year later, here we are.

But two weeks ago we received some good news – @elizabeth had been selected as a vaccination site volunteer. In exchange for working a shift at one of the primary Phoenix vaccination sites, she would receive the vaccine herself. She did so at an overnight shift a week ago and got her first dose of Pfizer. This was huge! Our largest worry throughout the pandemic was what we would do in the unlikely event that both of us became incapacitated by COVID. It’s not like we could give grandparents a call and ask them to come by to help. With that first shot, the countdown was on to our family’s literal safety, and it still hadn’t fully sunk in.

Then, two days ago, I was granted the same opportunity! Tomorrow I will report to the Chandler/Gilbert POD (point of dispensing) for a 6AM to 5:30PM shift doing whatever is needed to ensure the smooth operation of the POD. At the end, I’ll get a shot and we’ll be about 6 weeks out from being as fully vaccinated as we can be until the vaccine is approved for the kids. We are so grateful for the opportunity to accelerate not only our own immunity, but also to increase the likelihood that we can safely see family for the first time in over a year sooner than later.
